    The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels & Advanced Vehicles Data Center site is a wealth of information for those interested in sustainable and renewable energy resources as pertain to transportation, as well as fuel economy and advanced vehicle technologies to preserve our natural resources and gain energy independence. The transportation sector is responsible for 69 percent of total petroleum use in the United States. The AFDC is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Cities initiative.

    Clean Cities is a nationwide government-industry collaborative sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. Its mission is to reduce petroleum consumption in the transportation sector by advancing the use of alternative fuels and alternative fuel vehicles, altfuel blends, idle reduction technologies, hybrid and electric vehicles, and fuel efficient vehicles and driving practices.     There are two designated Clean Cities coalitions in Oklahoma, one based in the Central Oklahoma region (www.okcleancities.org) and one based in the Tulsa region (www.tulsacleancities.com). Both coalitions work to advance the deployment of alternative fuels and advanced vehicle technoligies throughout the state.

    A continuously updated directory of alternative fuel stations in Okahoma and across the nation including biodiesel, electric, ethanol, hydrogen natural gas, and propane, can be found on the AFDC Station Locator.

The Adopt-A-Highway program and "Oklahoma -- Keep Our Land Grand" anti-litter campaign are major community programs. Other programs include the Trash Poster Contest (deadline Jan. 31, 2003), the Spring TRASH-OFF, the Litter Hotline, the Highway Tree Grant Program and the Roadside Wildflower Program.
